Begin with simple tools
Begin with postcard-sized paper, one line-making tool, colour, water and a cloth. Traditional tools broaden the marks you can make, but you do not need everything at once.
Paper, line and colour
Choose paper that accepts a little bleed, a brush and ink for a slow varied line, and gansai or watercolour for light washes. Familiar art materials can also be used for practice.

Keep the marks that happened
Uneven lines, unexpected bleeds and open paper all belong to the card. Instead of correcting endlessly, look again and take the next step.
