The story behind this site
This site is a personal project by Gordon, created in appreciation of his mother-in-law, Minako Ogasawara 小笠原美那子, and her work as an etegami teacher in Hokkaido, Japan.
It brings together pictures, practical lessons and stories for readers in Japanese and English. You can begin with a finished card, follow a lesson, or discover how people keep in touch through the things they draw and write.
A place to begin
The lessons invite you to look closely at something familiar, make a drawing, add a few words and send it to someone. The gallery offers another starting point: pause with an image and notice what catches your eye.
Part of a wider story
Many artists, teachers and communities have helped etegami grow. Our History page follows some of those contributions, with links to the sources behind the account.
For the Japan Etegami Association’s own introduction, history and learning resources, please visit its official website. This family-created site is independently produced.
