Learning together

Learning together
A shared table is one way to enjoy etegami. An exchange of cards is another. These stories offer a glimpse of people making, learning and keeping in touch through picture letters.
An Ebetsu relay
When the Ebetsu etegami group’s meetings paused during the pandemic, members continued a shared work by post. A roll of paper travelled from one person to the next, becoming a place to draw together while apart.
Beyond one neighbourhood
Matsudo and its Australian sister city, Whitehorse, began exchanging etegami in fiscal 2023. Their city-themed cards offer one example of communities introducing themselves to each other through pictures and words.
Try an exchange of your own
Choose a friend and agree on a small theme: something on your table, something growing nearby, or a detail from your day. Make a card for each other. When the cards arrive, take time to look at both the picture and the words.
